Autoselecta auction report
Overview of the Porsche 911 Carrera 2 (964)
This is a May 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera 2, chassis code E-964A, offered at USS Tokyo as lot 75175 in the Imported Car Prime Corner. It is a left hand drive dealer import finished in Guards Red, with black leather, the 3.6 litre air cooled flat six and the four speed Tiptronic automatic. The sheet records 138,272 km, approximately 85,918 miles, an overall grade of 4 and an interior grade of C.
What sets this Porsche 911 Carrera 2 apart is the engine history. The sales points list a full engine overhaul in 2024, carried out at 135,000 km, supported by a maintenance invoice of 4.15 million yen. The car also carries a SPIRIT suspension kit and ADVAN Racing 18 inch wheels. Against that, the inspector notes engine vibration, so this is a car to bid on with open eyes and a clear plan.
The Drive Review
The 964 is the car that modernised the 911 without losing its character. It brought coil spring suspension, power steering and ABS to the long running rear engined coupe, yet the experience is still gloriously mechanical. The 3.6 litre M64 flat six sits behind the rear axle, makes around 250 PS in standard European form and delivers its power with a hard, ripping induction note that no water cooled engine can copy. Steering is light and talkative, and the nose follows the road with a directness modern Porsches have long since smoothed away.
This car is the Tiptronic, and that changes the picture. It is the most relaxed way to enjoy a 964, with the four speed gearbox allowing a manual style hold on a gear through the selector gate, but it does not suit everyone who wants the full old school 911 experience. It does make the car easier to live with in traffic, and the automatic 964 has always been the cheaper way into the model. The sheet confirms an aftermarket SPIRIT suspension kit, so ride and handling will differ from the factory set up. Expect a firmer, more focused feel, and judge the result on a test drive in your own country.
Auction Details
The car runs at USS Tokyo on 15 October 2026 as lot 75175. The auction start price is ¥6,980,000. The Autoselecta guide bidding range is £31,750 to £71,750. This is an estimated range based on the market, not a guaranteed purchase price, and there is no promise the car will sell within it. For reference, four similar cars sold at Japanese auctions between £60,367 and £71,838, though that range includes other versions and conditions. The current minimum bid and the full cost to bring the car to your country are calculated live in the price panel on this page, so please refer to that rather than to this text.

Factory Features and Equipment
The sheet marks power steering, power windows and leather, and air conditioning is shown as fitted, although the inspector records it as faulty. The sales points state a factory car without sunroof, which keeps the roofline clean and saves weight. The photographs show a black leather interior with the classic five dial instrument cluster, a Tiptronic selector and an aftermarket head unit with a small additional display below it. Navigation, ETC, a spare key and owner manuals are not mentioned on the sheet and are not confirmed. The new car service book box is blank, so an original service book is not confirmed, although a maintenance invoice is stated as available.
Japanese Auction Report Translation
The sheet details are translated and checked by Autoselecta. The sales points list Guards Red (G1), a factory car without sunroof, the M64/02 engine number 62N51959, a full engine overhaul in 2024, an engine overhaul at 135,000 km, a SPIRIT suspension kit, ADVAN Racing 18 inch wheels and a maintenance invoice of 4.15 million yen.
The points to note read as follows. Cylinder heads overhauled. Valve guides and valve seats reworked. Crank and con rod bearings replaced. Piston rings and timing chains replaced. Front and rear brake discs and pads replaced. Stainless steel braided brake hoses. Maintenance invoice available.
The inspector's report records the following. Front floor scratched and dented. Engine vibration (shake) and air conditioning faulty. Seat torn and peeling. Dashboard panel cracked. Steering wheel scratched. Bonnet damper faulty. Exterior repaired in the same colour. Small scratches and dents.
The engine vibration is the comment to take most seriously. It sits alongside a comprehensive overhaul, so the cause is worth establishing before or soon after purchase. The air conditioning is recorded as faulty, and no oil or coolant leaks, warning lights, clutch or transmission faults are written on the sheet. The sheet does not say who carried out the overhaul or give the invoice detail, so ask for it. The colour change box shows only an arrow, read as no colour change, but this is not certain.
Damage Diagram and Body Condition
The diagram is light. At the front bumper the mark スリA is a scuff. On the front right lamp the mark レンズY2 indicates a cracked lens, a medium crack, although the sheet reading is not certain as to which front lamp the leader points to and it appears to be the right. At the front centre, in the windscreen area, トビA indicates stone chips, though the exact position, windscreen or front of the roof, is not certain. A1 on the right rear quarter panel is a small scratch, and A1 on the rear bumper is also a small scratch. There are no replaced panel, dent, rust or corrosion marks on the diagram.
The written comments add small scratches and dents, a scratched and dented front floor and exterior repairs in the same colour. Together with the grade 4 exterior, this describes a usable enthusiast car with honest cosmetic wear and some repaired areas, not a collector grade example. The photographs show glossy paint with good panel alignment and a tidy shell, with the SPIRIT lowered stance and the ADVAN wheels clear in the images.
Interior Condition
The interior grade of C reflects real wear. The inspector records a torn and peeling seat, a cracked dashboard panel and a scratched steering wheel, and the air conditioning is faulty. The photographs show black leather seats and trim in generally presentable order, with the five gauge cluster readable and an aftermarket head unit fitted. The odometer in the photograph appears to read slightly higher than the sheet figure, so this report uses the sheet reading of 138,272 km. Smell, headlining and carpet condition are not mentioned on the sheet and are not confirmed.
Japanese Auction Grades
Japanese auction grades run from 1 to 5, with 4 describing a good car with some wear and repairs, and R or RA marking repaired accident history. Interior grades run from A to D, so C is fair and shows noticeable wear. Here the overall grade is 4, the exterior grade is 4 and the interior grade is C.
The 964 arrived in 1989 as the first major redesign of the 911 since 1963. Around 85 percent of the parts were new, but the silhouette stayed true. The Carrera 4 launched first with all wheel drive, followed by the rear wheel drive Carrera 2. The 3.6 litre engine, internally the M64, replaced the old 3.2 litre unit, and the Tiptronic automatic joined the range in 1990. Production ended in 1993 for the 993 in the 1994 model year, which makes this May 1993 car a late example of the generation. The Carrera RS, Turbo and Speedster variants of the 964 sit well above this car in the pecking order, but the standard Carrera 2 remains the core of the line.
Why This Model Has Become Collectible
The 964 is the last 911 with a fully traditional air cooled flat six that also gains modern chassis refinement and decent reliability. It sits in a sweet spot between the raw 930 era and the more polished 993. Values have risen for years, and clean cars with documented engine work are increasingly hard to find. Japan is a respected source because cars were often well kept, sold through dealer networks and checked by independent inspectors. Collectors will note that a Tiptronic is less sought after than a manual, and that modified suspension and wheels move the car away from original, so its appeal is as a driver, not a concours piece. No future value is promised, and this should not be treated as an investment.
What To Look For When Buying This Model
On any 964, check the engine for oil leaks, particularly around the cylinder head covers, the case and the distributor area. This car's overhaul covered heads, bearings, rings and timing chains, so the key question is the engine vibration the inspector noted. Ask for the 4.15 million yen invoice, and have a Porsche specialist check ignition, mixture, engine mounts and the chain tensioners. The 964 timing chain tensioners are fed from engine oil, and wear in this area is a known concern. Inspect the Tiptronic for smooth shifts and fluid condition. Look underneath for rust at the scuttle, windscreen surround and sills. On this car, view the cracked dashboard, torn seat, repaired panels and front floor dent, and confirm that the SPIRIT suspension is correctly set up and that the bonnet damper is replaced. Air conditioning will need diagnosis.
Why Import This Car From Japan
Japanese cars are usually serviced at dealers, driven gently and inspected with a clear grading system. A documented overhaul and an independent auction sheet make it easier to judge a car before buying, which is rare with older Porsches.

Auction Caution
Auction cars are inspected before sale but are still used vehicles. The auction sheet is an independent condition guide, not a mechanical warranty. Older performance cars like this 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 may need servicing, maintenance or refurbishment after purchase. Please note the inspector's warnings of engine vibration, faulty air conditioning, a torn seat, a cracked dashboard, a faulty bonnet damper, a scratched and dented front floor and same colour exterior repairs. The air conditioning, seat and dashboard repairs and an engine check are likely to be needed after arrival.
