How It Works
The True Cost Of Importing A Car From Japan

There is a simple reason why so many people pause and hesitate before buying a car from Japan. It's simply because nobody ever shows you the full picture.
You might see a car sell at auction for what looks like a bargain price, but that hammer figure is just the starting point. Between Japan and your country, there are multiple stages that need to be handled properly, and when those stages are not explained clearly, the process feels risky.
The reality is that importing a vehicle from Japan isn't complicated. It just requires knowledge and structure.
The starting point is the auction hammer price. This amount is what the vehicle sells for on the day in Japan. That price is always in local currency, Japanese yen.
Next come the Japanese auction house fees and the local agent's handling charges. Every auction house charges fees to process the sale, complete the paperwork and release the vehicle. Our licensed export agent is required to bid on your behalf, settle the invoice and prepare the vehicle for export. These are standard industry costs and are non-negotiable.

Once the vehicle has been secured, it then has to be transported to the port and prepared for export. This includes clearing it for export and getting a slot booked on a shipping vessel. You have the option to choose whether the car travels in a shared container or via RoRo shipping. Container shipping provides additional protection, is often preferred for higher value vehicles and is normally the fastest to be delivered. RoRo can sometimes be cost effective, normally on smaller or lighter vehicles, but can take longer to arrive due to the number of vehicles it collects to make it cost effective for the shipping companies. Ocean freight rates fluctuate depending on demand, season and carrier availability. Exchange rates also move daily, and if you're not fixing these correctly, the final price can drift away from what you originally expected to pay.
As an example, when the vehicle arrives in the United Kingdom, it must be cleared through customs. The import duty and VAT are paid, port handling charges are settled and the vehicle is then released.
If the car is under 10 years old, an IVA inspection must be carried out before the registration process. MOTs are required on all vehicles before we apply to the DVLA for a logbook in your name. The DVLA will give your new vehicle a registration number and we will add the number plates. Once all of this is complete, the vehicle can be delivered to your door. Our guide to importing cars from Japan to the UK covers each step.
Each of these stages involves lots of patience and time, documentation, bookings, compliance checks and coordination across time zones.
Where confusion often creeps in is when different companies all handle separate parts of the chain. One party sources the car, another handles transporting the vehicle from the auction to the shipping yard, and a third manages the clearance. Margins are added at each stage and the buyer is left trying to calculate the true landed cost themselves, and often feels like they've been taken advantage of.
At Autoselecta, we structure the entire process around one principle. The price you see while you are bidding will always reflect the landed cost of the car.
Our live calculator includes the hammer price, auction and agent fees, exchange rates, inland and export shipping, customs charges, port fees, clearance costs and delivery. Our fixed service fee is added transparently, based on the vehicle value, so there are absolutely no surprise charges once the car arrives at your destination.
